What Are Dry Sockets All About?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , ,

Dry socket is a very traumatic dental complication that happens after a wisdom tooth is removed. Normally a blood clot is formed to protect the jaw bone and the surrounding tissues. This blood clot due to some reasons gets dislodged. The pain due to extraction starts lessening by the second day. In this complication there is an increase of pain that spreads to the eyes and ears and becomes unbearable.

How will you know that you have this condition?

There are basically three signs that indicate this complication.

Firstly there is intense pain at the extracted site, which with time spreads to the ears and eyes on the side of the face that has the extracted site.

Secondly, there is foul taste at the extracted site which also emits a very foul odor.

The third sign is a visible one that shows the blood clot absent and the jaw bone exposed below.

Why does someone develop this condition?

Research has still to give us convincing reasons about what actually causes this. However some factors have been discovered that make a person more susceptible to this dental complication.

People who do not follow the dentist’s post operative instructions are more likely to end up with this.

Smoking can make a person more susceptible to this condition. The nicotine in the smoke can lower the healing powers of the body. What’s more the action of sucking can remove the blood clot.

Birth control pills taken by women are a major risk factor for them. The estrogen in the pills may have a role in disintegrating the blood clot. It is for this reason that women on pills undergo tooth extractions on days when estrogen levels are on the lower side.

People with a history of this condition are likely to get it again.

People who don’t practice good oral hygiene are more susceptible to this complication

How do you get rid of a dry socket?

There is nothing you can do to speed up the healing process. The removal of the blood clot delayed the healing process. The healing will continue but at a reduced speed. In the meanwhile medications are given to reduce the pain. Analgesics work in the initial stages. Then stronger pain killers are given in the form of medicated packings that are inserted at the extracted site.

Root Canal Treatment For Your Teeth

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , ,

A root canal is defined as a dental procedure where a severely decayed tooth is restored by removing the dead or dying nerve tissues, including the decayed pulp material inside the tooth. It is then sealed with a latex material. The procedure is successful when the pain is gone.

The purpose of a root canal is to relieve the pain and prevent further decay of the tooth from within. Replacing the decayed material pulp of the tooth with latex pulp enables the patient to keep their teeth. An irregularly shaped tooth is also prone to infections and may need a root canal procedure.

The advantage of a root canal is that the patient gets to keep their original tooth. It also prevents infection. The disadvantage is that nerves or tissues that are not removed may cause gum infections. These may occur when nerves or tissues are pushed to the roots during the application of the latex. When infection occurs after a root canal procedure, taking oral antibiotics is the most frequent treatment. If the infection is persistent for months, there is no other recourse but a root canal or tooth extraction as the nerves are either dead or decaying. If the infection is new, it may only be due to nerve irritation and can still be treated.

Pulp Capping – This involves the removal of decayed and infected tissues, sterilization, and stoppage of the bleeding in the area and application of the filling. This is one of the ways to avoid a root canal. Proper pulp capping can last long.

Extractions – The last recourse is complete removal of the tooth. This is less expensive but having dentures later will be costly. Be sure to think of all the drawbacks before you undergo tooth extraction.

2nd Opinion – If you have doubts regarding your dentist’s explanation or treatment approach then you have all the right to see another dentist.

Wisdom Teeth Dentists In Utah

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , ,

In Utah, a wisdom tooth is any of the third molars, including both the mandibular third molar and the maxillary third molar. Most people usually get their wisdom teeth between the ages of 17 and 25. Having four wisdom teeth is considered the norm, but it is possible to have more (called supernumerary teeth) or less (called hypodontia). In most cases, wisdom teeth will affect other teeth as they come in, becoming impacted or “coming in sideways”. When this occurs, they are usually removed through a process called “extraction”. Your local Utah dentist can easily extract a wisdom tooth with little to no preparation.

Before you go to your dentist, you should know that there are four distinct categories of impacted wisdom teeth. The most common type in Utah is the one where the tooth points forward, also known as Mesioangular (44%). The second most common type of impacted wisdom tooth in Utah is Vertical impaction (38%); this is where the tooth doesn’t fully come through the gum line. Distoangular impaction (6%) is fairly rare, and means the wisdom tooth points towards the rear of the mouth. The rarest type of impacted wisdom tooth in Utah is Horizontal impaction (3%), where the tooth is at a right angle and is growing into the root of the second molar.

Utah dentists can check to see if you have another, sub-type of wisdom tooth impaction, one known as a bony impaction. When your wisdom teeth are still encased within the jawbone, you have a bony impaction. A soft tissue impaction is where your wisdom teeth have erupted from the jawbone but haven’t penetrated the gumline. This is where the wisdom tooth has come in but hasn’t completely broken a hole in the gumline. A soft tissue cap called an operculum will form over the wisdom tooth. As you can expect, wisdom teeth covered by an operculum can be nigh impossible to clean using just a toothbrush.

Because an operculum makes cleaning a wisdom tooth difficult with conventional means, bacteria and debris can gather there at an alarming rate. This may cause pericoronitis, an infection problem common in Utah with young adults with partial impactions. A swelling and redness in the gum around the wisdom tooth are common symptons of pericoronitis; so are difficulty opening the mouth, bad odors or tastes in the mouth, pain in the region that may run up the jaw or down the neck. Untreated, the infection can progress to more sever infections. Recommended treatment is the extraction of the wisdom tooth, and you can have your wisdom teeth removed quite easily in Utah.
